"Doubting yourself is normal. Letting it stop you is a choice." - Mel Robbins
Do you ever notice how you get all excited about an idea or a possible solution to a problem, but then doubt starts to creep in and you find yourself thinking "I don't know. Maybe that won't work. I probably can't actually do that." 🤔
In todays blog post, I am going to cover 3 ways that you can overcome doubt.
TIP #1 Get a good coach or mentor
It is AMAZING how much it can help to have a good coach or mentor help you work through some of the mindset issues we face.
We all have doubt at one time or another.
It's totally normal.
The problem lies with not being able to always figure out if your doubt is on point or if it is just your critter brain trying to protect you.
There is a part of our brain (the sympathetic nervous system) that is designed to protect us with a 'fight or flight' type response. Sometimes, without even knowing it....we trigger this and other brain responses making it nearly impossible for us to be positive, creative, or effective at what we actually would like to do.
In addition, when we share an idea with our friends or family, sometimes they will also try to 'protect' us and therefore tell us not to do something.
They may say something like "Are you sure that's a good idea?" or "Do you really think that will work?" Or even “Well best of luck to you.” When deep down they don’t know what else to say to your idea because they are pretty sure it isn’t going to work out, but they just don’t want to tell you that.
It's not that they want to create doubt in our minds, they just don't want us to fail or get hurt and then be sad, frustrated or disappointed.
They are just trying to protect us much like our critter brain tries so hard to protect us.
This is where having a life coach or mentor to talk with, can help you get some clarity from a perfectly non biased outsider perspective.
A life coach or mentor can listen to your ideas and thoughts and help you work through some of those doubts and concerns.
I would highly suggest you consider working with a life coach or mentor, even if only for a couple of months.
I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how helpful it is to be able to talk with a good life coach or mentor. 😊
TIP #2 Surround yourself with positive people
Interestingly enough...the people we spend the most time with have a huge impact on our lives.
We may not even notice it....but it's true.
The people we hang out with the most really do affect us.
They affect the way we think.
They affect the way we act.
They affect the choices we end up making.
"You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." - Jim Rohn
If the 5 people that you hang out with the most are negative or complain a lot, or if they don't encourage you to go all in on your goals and dreams....then it's time to find 5 new people to start hanging out with.
It doesn't mean that you can't hang out with your friends who are negative Nelly or pessimistic Pam, it just means that you want to limit how much time you spend with them.
Make it a priority to spend the majority of your time with people who will build you up and encourage you to keep growing and keep working towards your goals.
The 5 people you hang out with most should have goals and dreams of their own that they are excited about and working towards.
If the 5 people you are hanging out with most don't have any goals or dreams that they are working on, then it's definitely time to find 5 new friends.
It is SOO important to surround yourself with people who build you up. That alone will help you not struggle so much with doubt because it will help you know with confidence that you CAN do it!!
Obviously with Covid, most of us are not hanging out in person. We are hanging out online.
The good news is that there are tons of great FB groups that you can join to surround yourself with others who are also goal focused and reaching their goals and dreams!
TIP #3 Just Do It!!!
Nike says it best. Just do it! A big part of conquering doubt is confidence. And the best way to increase your confidence is by taking action.
The only way to get good at something is by actually doing it.
Not just once or twice, but over and over again.
In the book ”Fear is not the boss of you” by Jennifer Allwood, I love how she says it! She says “Confidence is what comes after you do the thing you are scared of, and then do the thing again, and then do the thing again.”
With massive repetition, we eventually become a pro at it.
And once we become a pro at it, our confidence soars. 😀💃🎉👏👍🏻
With soaring confidence, we no longer have doubt because we know that we are really good at it!
So instead of spending time worrying about if you can do something. Just do it!!
If you fail at it, do it again and again and again.
Do it so many times that you can do it with your eyes closed.
Then doubt will disappear.
Rinse and repeat for anything in your life that you have doubt with.
In ”Fear is not the boss of of you” Jennifer Allwood says “Confidence is an end result, the byproduct and the happy consequence of doing things while you're afraid.”
So don’t let doubt or fears slow you down.
Just do it!!
Don‘t even give doubt a chance to take up space in our thoughts.
So in conclusion, if you want to overcome doubt.....do these 3 things:
Get a great coach or mentor
Surround yourself with 5 supportive and uplifting people who build you up and encourage you to reach for your goals and dreams.
Just do it! Take action and do it over and over again until you can do it with your eyes closed 😉
I really hope this has helped you.
